FERPA (The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) is a Federal law that affords parents the right to have access to their children’s education records, the right to seek to have the records amended, and the right to have some control over the disclosure of personally identifiable information from the education records.

Parent Rights and Parkside Preschool Policies/Procedures

  • Preschool personnel may access student records only for legitimate educational purposes and to carry out their responsibilities to each student.
  • The release of student record information requires a written release from the student’s parent/guardian. Under certain circumstances and applicable laws, information may be released to other agencies, such as Child Protective Services, without parent permission.
  • Parents have the right to inspect, review, and confirm the accuracy of their child’s educational record. They may seek to amend student records believed to be inaccurate or misleading.
Parents have a right to request complete copies of all educational information in their child’s master file.
  • Parents will not be charged for electronic copies requested within reasonable time frames. However, repeated requests for copies of the same record or hard copies may result in a charge.
  • Federal law requires schools to comply with parental requests for access to student records within 45 days or less. Parkside would include the copying of student records within this time frame, although rarely should this process require this length of time.
