The Preschool implements a Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) framework school-wide. The framework was established with the assistance of a State Education Department-affiliated trainer.

PBIS is an evidence-based framework built on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis, and is used in schools nationwide to foster social, emotional, and academic success. The framework includes primary (school-wide), secondary (classroom), and tertiary (individual) systems of support that improve outcomes for all children by rendering targeted maladaptive behavior less effective and desired behavior more functional and effective in meeting the child’s needs and goals.

Our mission is to create a positive and safe environment for students, staff and families with an emphasis on teaching prosocial behaviors in order to improve academic, behavioral and social outcomes for all students.

Foundations of PBIS

  • Effectively design the physical layout of the classroom
  • Develop and teach predictable classroom routines
  • Post, define, and teach 3-5 developmentally appropriate classroom expectations

Examples of Proactive and Positive Classroom Supports

  • Provide high rates of varied opportunities to respond
  • Use prompts and active supervision
  • Acknowledge expected/desired behavior with specific praise and individualized or group reinforcement
